Nyepi - Balinese Day of Silence 2027

Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu New Year, falling on the new moon of the Saka calendar. In 2027, it falls on 9 March. Unlike New Year celebrations almost anywhere else in the world, Nyepi is observed as a day of complete silence, fasting, and meditation. The entire island of Bali shuts down for 24 hours — from 6am on 9 March to 6am on 10 March.

What Nyepi Actually Means

During the Day of Silence, four strict prohibitions apply to all people on Bali, including tourists staying at hotels: no fire or lights (nyepi means “silence” and also implies darkness), no working, no travelling, and no entertainment. The airport at Ngurah Rai closes for the full 24 hours — no flights depart or arrive. Roads are empty. Beaches are closed. Even internet access is restricted in some areas. Pecalang (village security guards in traditional dress) patrol the streets to enforce the prohibitions.

The purpose is spiritual. Balinese Hindus believe that demons flying over the island, finding it dark and silent, will believe the island is uninhabited and move on — leaving Bali free of malevolent influences for the coming year. The day is spent in meditation, prayer and reflection.

The Ogoh-Ogoh Parade (8 March)

The night before Nyepi — the eve, called Pengrupukan — is the opposite of what follows. Communities across Bali construct enormous papier-mache demon figures (ogoh-ogoh) over several weeks, then parade them through the streets accompanied by gamelan music and torchlight. The figures are deliberately terrifying, representing negative spirits that are symbolically driven away. The parade typically begins at dusk and the figures are burned or dismantled after. This is the most photogenic and accessible event surrounding Nyepi.

Ubud, Denpasar and Kuta all have substantial ogoh-ogoh processions. Ubud’s is particularly atmospheric given the narrow streets and dense crowds.

Practical Information for Visitors

If you are staying in Bali on Nyepi day, you must remain in your accommodation for the full 24 hours. Hotels prepare by stocking up on food and often organise quiet in-house activities. Outside-facing lights must be dimmed or covered. This is not an optional rule for tourists — pecalang will ask anyone found outdoors to return inside.

Plan accordingly: do not book flights arriving or departing on 9 March. Stock up on any supplies you need before the end of 8 March.
