Galungan & Kuningan - Bali 2026

Galungan is the most important festival in the Balinese Hindu calendar. It celebrates the triumph of dharma over adharma and marks the period when ancestral spirits are believed to return to visit their families. The festival runs for 10 days, closing with Kuningan on 3 October 2026. Galungan and Kuningan fall every 210 days in the Pawukon calendar, so they occur roughly twice a year.

What You Will See

The most visible sign of Galungan is the penjor — tall bamboo poles decorated with woven coconut leaves, flowers, fruit and offerings — that line every road across Bali. Families erect them outside their homes on the eve of Galungan, and the sight of a road flanked by hundreds of penjor curving overhead is genuinely striking. The roads around Ubud and Gianyar tend to have particularly dense displays.

On Galungan morning, Balinese families dress in traditional white and yellow clothing and visit their family and village temples to pray and make offerings. Temple courtyards fill with elaborately stacked fruit and rice cake offerings carried on women’s heads. Gamelan orchestras play in temple grounds. This is a deeply local and genuinely spiritual day — visitors are welcome to observe from a respectful distance.

In the days between Galungan and Kuningan, barong processions move through villages. The barong is a sacred lion-like creature danced by two performers under a carved and gilded costume; it represents protective spirits and often appears alongside the witch figure Rangda. These street processions are spontaneous and unscheduled — wandering through a village on foot during this period is the best way to encounter one.

Kuningan, the closing day, is when the ancestral spirits are believed to return to the spirit world. Families make yellow rice offerings and pray at temples once more.

Tips for Visitors

The period is one of the most atmospheric times to be in Bali. Note that many Balinese-owned businesses, including some warungs and family guesthouses, may close on Galungan and Kuningan days as owners attend family ceremonies. Allow extra time if you need transport on those specific days.

Dress modestly when near temples — a sarong and sash are required. Many guesthouses provide these for guests. Do not walk through or obstruct temple processions; step aside and let them pass.
