Bali Arts Festival 2026

The Bali Arts Festival (Pesta Kesenian Bali) has run every June and July since 1979, when it was established to preserve and promote Balinese performing arts during a period of rapid tourism growth. Today it is the largest annual arts event in Indonesia and draws tens of thousands of visitors, with most performances held at Taman Budaya (the Bali Arts Centre) in Denpasar.

What Happens at the Festival

The festival opens with a grand parade along Jalan Sudirman in Denpasar. Each of Bali’s nine regencies fields a delegation in full ceremonial dress, performing traditional dances and gamelan music as they march to the arts centre. The procession typically runs for three or four hours and is free to watch from the roadside — arrive by 9am to claim a spot near the route.

Over the following four weeks, the programme covers dozens of art forms: Kecak fire dance, Legong, Barong, Topeng mask theatre, wayang kulit shadow puppetry, and newer experimental forms. The craft market at Taman Budaya runs throughout the festival and is one of the best places in Bali to buy direct from artisans — woodcarvers, silver smiths, ikat weavers and batik makers from across the archipelago.

Evening performances at the open-air amphitheatre are the highlight. Tickets for major shows sell quickly; buy from the Taman Budaya box office in person or via the official Bali Tourism Board website. Prices range from around IDR 50,000 to IDR 150,000 depending on the performance.

Practical Information

Taman Budaya is in central Denpasar, roughly 45 minutes from Seminyak and an hour from Ubud in normal traffic. Taxis and ride-share apps (Gojek, Grab) are the easiest way to get there. Parking on site is available but the area gets congested on opening night and major performance evenings.

The arts centre grounds are open daily during the festival, usually from around 9am. Dress modestly — a sarong and sash are required for entry to any sacred or ceremonial area. Light clothing is fine for evening performances; bring a thin layer as the open-air venues can feel cool once the sun drops.

Tips for Visitors

Plan to attend at least one evening performance and spend an afternoon in the craft market. If you want to photograph the opening parade, the section of Jalan Sudirman closest to Taman Budaya gives the best views as delegations arrive and begin their final routines. Check the published programme (released a few weeks before opening) and book tickets for your preferred shows early — Kecak and Legong performances sell out first.
