Canberra's First-Ever Overseas Flight Goes Direct to Bali
Australian travellers from the capital now have a direct path to Bali without the need to transit through Sydney or Melbourne. Canberra Airport launched its first-ever international route on 22 June 2026 with three weekly return services to Ngurah Rai International Airport in Denpasar.
The seasonal route runs through January 2027, covering the peak Australian travel window. Canberra is home to a significant government and diplomatic community, and the new service is expected to carry both leisure travellers and Indonesians visiting Australia on official and business travel.
The launch adds Canberra to an already expanding list of Australian cities with direct Bali connections in 2026. Indonesia AirAsia began daily Melbourne–Denpasar flights in March, Jetstar launched routes from Melbourne Avalon and a Sunshine Coast service via Bali, and Virgin Australia has strengthened its Brisbane and Perth frequencies throughout the year.
Bali’s Ngurah Rai Airport is undergoing a connectivity expansion drive in 2026 and has added international routes from Taipei (Starlux Airlines, from October) and Da Nang (from March) to its growing network.
Visitors to Bali from Australia require either a Visa on Arrival (IDR 500,000, approximately AUD 50) valid for 30 days and extendable once, or an e-Visa on Arrival obtained online before departure. All arrivals must also pay the Bali Tourist Levy of IDR 150,000 (approximately AUD 15), which can be completed online via the Love Bali platform before landing.
Travellers should note the ongoing summer heat advisory for Bali and southern Indonesia. Temperatures are at their peak in June and July, and healthcare providers have flagged elevated heatstroke risk for visitors engaging in outdoor activities during midday hours.
